About the workshop

The potential for financial instruments under the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) and other resources to support integration of third-country nationals (migrants) in the EU is being carried out in a fi-compass EU-wide study. The study focuses into three key areas: microfinance, housing and social impact investing.

During the first fi-compass AMIF thematic workshop, organised by European Commission Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs (DG HOME) in partnership with the European Investment Bank (EIB), the initial research results and feedback from the involved stakeholders involved in the EU-wide study have been presented.

AMIF managing authorities, European Integration Network (EIN) members and other relevant stakeholders engaged on discussions around the types of projects supporting the integration of migrants, the demand in financing for such projects, the scope of AMIF support in 2021-2027 in their Member States, challenges and lessons learnt, and if financial instruments (also potentially combined with grant) could be a suitable solution to meet the financing needs.

The workshop was also an opportunity to present the fi-compass support available to the AMIF managing authorities and other relevant stakeholders interested in becoming involved in future financial instruments supporting migrant integration.

This fi-compass factsheet introduces the potential use of financial instruments in the area of early stage and long-term integration of migrants in the EU. It describes how the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) financing may be deployed for the first time through financial instruments such as loans, guarantees and equity, to support relevant objectives of this EU policy area.

The publication addresses mainly managing authorities in charge of AMIF and other relevant funds (e.g. ESF+, ERDF) but also financial intermediaries, municipalities and all other stakeholders involved in programming or implementation of projects for migrants and refugees (third-country nationals) in the Multiannual Financial Framework 2021-2027.
