About the conference
The European Commission (EC), Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development (DG AGRI), and the European Investment Bank (EIB) organised the 'Insurance and access to finance for farm resilience and adaptation in the EU' event on 20 May 2025 in Brussels.
The conference was opened by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food, Christophe Hansen, and the Vice-President of the European Investment Bank, Gelsomina Vigliotti.
Throughout the day, experts and policy makers addressed the critical challenges and opportunities in securing the agricultural sector against climate change and safeguarding its access to finance. Key topics included inter alia the overview, classification, state of play and role of agriculture insurance systems in the EU alongside the expected impact of climate change on ten selected Member States, the use of reinsurance and catastrophe bonds, the building blocks of a coherent EU risk management system, and how to cater for efficient and effective public-private partnerships to ensure continued access to finance for transition and adaptation in agriculture in the EU.
The conference built on the new fi-compass study 'Insurance and Risk Management Tools for Agriculture in the EU', the results of which were presented at the conference.
The conference was aimed at EAFRD managing authorities, banks and insurance companies active in the agriculture sector, experts, farm unions’ representatives, European Investment Bank Group and European Commission officials interested in EAFRD financial instruments.
