About the roundtable
The European Commission (DG Agriculture and Rural Development) and the European Investment Bank Group organised a roundtable on ‘Financing young and new farmers for EU generational renewal’, which took place on 24 March, in Brussels.
The event supported the Commission’s Strategy for Generational Renewal in Agriculture and accompanied ongoing work to develop new financial and advisory solutions for the EU agriculture sector. A particular focus was placed on improving access to finance for young and new farmers, including the exploration of joint financial instruments that could combine CAP resources with EIB Group financing, guarantees, and advisory services to address the specific financing challenges faced by young and new farmers.
The roundtable brought together EU financial institutions - including banks, microfinance providers, guarantee institutions and alternative finance actors, alongside representatives from young farmers’ organisations.
Discussions focused on key investment needs, access‑to‑finance barriers, and how improved financial products, risk‑mitigation tools and EU‑level support can unlock more opportunities for young and new farmers. Through these discussions, the roundtable aimed to identify practical solutions, operational improvements, and financing options that can support young and new farmers across the EU, ultimately strengthening the long‑term sustainability and competitiveness of European agriculture.
